Origin of Sweet Fanny Adams

The slang originated from a murder in the UK in 1867. The victim is an 8-year-old girl whose name is Fanny Adams. Everyone living in England at the time would have known the name of 'sweet' Fanny Adams. With gruesome humor, her name came to be used by sailors in the British Royal Navy as a  term to refer to a type of unpleasant tinned meat they were often served. The current meaning emerged in the 20th century. Sweet Fanny Adams has often shortened to sweet FA in the speech, which is interpreted to be a euphemism for sweet "fuck-all".
